東京23区内にありながら、深い自然に包まれた等々力渓谷。
ここは都内唯一の渓谷であり、
豊かな水をたたえる「不動の滝」が流れ落ちる、
まさに都会の隠れたオアシスだ。

この地は、古くから修行の場とされてきた。
約1300年前、推古天皇の時代に役小角（えんのおづぬ）が
霊夢を受け、不動尊を彫ったと伝えられている。

また、目黒不動尊との関わりも面白い。
かつて等々力不動尊のお不動様を目黒へ貸したものの、
戻ることはなく、それが目黒不動として祀られることになったという。

この縁起には諸説あるが、
それほどまでにこの地のお不動様が
多くの人々の信仰を集めていた証ともいえる。

等々力の地名は、
多摩川の東京都世田谷区側と神奈川県川崎市側に存在します。
その由来には、等々力渓谷に流れる
「不動の滝」の轟く音にちなむ説が有力です。

かつてこの地は洪水の影響を受け、多摩川の流れが変わることで、
川崎側の等々力が飛び地となりました。

今では川を挟んでまるで異なる空間が広がる。
世田谷側は丘陵地であり、不動尊が守る自然豊かな土地として、
時代を超えて静けさと神秘を保ち続けている。

春には桜が咲き誇り、秋には紅葉が渓谷を彩る。
四季折々の表情を見せるこの地は、ただの観光地ではなく、
訪れる人の心を癒し、力を与えてくれる場所です。

不動明王の炎の力と、渓谷の水のエネルギー。
その対照的な二つが共存するこの場所で、

Todoroki Valley: An Oasis of Nature in the Heart of Tokyo

Nestled within Tokyo’s 23 wards, Todoroki Valley is a haven of deep natural beauty. It’s the only valley in Tokyo, a hidden urban oasis where the abundant waters of Fudo Falls cascade down.

This area has long been a place of ascetic practice. Legend has it that about 1,300 years ago, during the reign of Empress Suiko, En no Ozunu received a divine dream and carved the Fudo statue.

The connection with Meguro Fudo is also intriguing. It’s said that the Fudo statue from Todoroki Fudo was once lent to Meguro, but it was never returned and came to be enshrined as Meguro Fudo. While there are various theories about this origin, it’s a testament to how deeply the Fudo statue of this area was revered by many people.

The name “Todoroki” exists on both the Setagaya Ward (Tokyo) and Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture) sides of the Tama River. The prevailing theory is that it derives from the thunderous sound of Fudo Falls flowing through Todoroki Valley.

In the past, this area was affected by floods, and the changing course of the Tama River resulted in the Kawasaki side of Todoroki becoming a detached area. Today, vastly different spaces spread on either side of the river. The Setagaya side, a hilly area with abundant nature protected by Fudo, has maintained its tranquility and mystique through the ages.

Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and autumn brings vibrant foliage that colors the valley. This place, which displays a different face each season, is more than just a tourist spot; it’s a place that heals and energizes the hearts of those who visit.
